Shigella flexneri inhibition by acetic acid.
The degree of Shigella flexneri inhibition by acetic acid in a chemically defined medium was dependent upon the concentration of undissociated acetic acid in the medium. Under the conditions of the experiments, the critical concentration of undissociated acetic acid that completely inhibited S. flexneri multiplication was approximately 0.0018 M. Adjustment of the medium from pH 6.0 to 7.0 after...
متن کاملSurvival of Shigella in Sewage. Ii. Effect of Glycerol on Shigella Flexneri and Shigella Bacteriophage.
Glycerol (30%) inhibited or delayed the adsorption of Shigella bacteriophage on its host organism, S. flexneri II; glycerol also inhibited or delayed the burst of phage, whether or not adsorption was carried out in the presence of glycerol. Studies of the mechanisms of these effects showed that viscosity and osmotic shock probably were not responsible for either phenomenon. The inhibition of ad...
متن کاملSplenic abscess caused by Shigella flexneri and Bacteroides fragilis.
We report a case of splenic abscess from which only Shigella flexneri (serotype 1a) and Bacteroides fragilis were isolated. The patient was a 59-year-old diabetic female who displayed minimal gastrointestinal symptoms. The S. flexneri isolate was resistant to chloramphenicol and tetracycline. The possible synergistic relationship between the two organisms is discussed.
متن کاملNutrition of Shigella: growth of Shigella flexneri in a simple chemically defined medium.
The nutritional requirements of Shigella grown in chemically defined media have been investigated by Koser et at. (1938a, b), Kligler and Grosowitz (1939), and Weil and Black (1944), among others. These investigators have reported the successful cultivation of various strains of Shigella in chemically defined, synthetic media of variable composition. All of these media consisted of inorganic sa...
متن کاملKeratitis due to Shigella flexneri.
Multiresistant Shigella flexneri isolates were cultured from the cornea and stool of a girl. Genetic analysis showed the isolates were identical. Shigella spp. are rare causes of ulcerative keratitis; there have only been 14 published cases since 1943. Although prognosis after local treatment is good, shigellosis is a systemic infection, possibly leading to dehydration.
